Keeping a Good Attitude during Accounting Busy Season
When busy season for accountants comes around, tensions run high and deadlines come quick. Sometimes it never seems like there is enough time in the day to accomplish your work.
So much of the job relies on teamwork that the ability to keep a good attitude in the most tense of situations is essential to succeeding on the job. Here are a few good tips to keep the right attitude when things are tough:
- Let it go – Sometimes when the tensions are high in the workplace, people can make comments that they don’t mean or perhaps can be taken the wrong way. Someone may be in a bad mood because of something else going on in their lives. Developing the ability to recognize these types of situations and let what people say or do during them go is vitally important to maintaining a positive attitude, which will eventually shine through to others.
- Change the meaning – When you set out to do something and can’t accomplish it, don’t settle for what the meaning of it appears to be. Some people may mess up and think that it means they are a bad accountant – I challenge you to change the meaning to something positive such as the situation shining a light on a development area for yourself which you will be able to learn from and improve for next time it comes around.
- Don’t sweat the small stuff – Getting overly upset about things going wrong is always a recipe for disaster – often times it is these small things that aren’t really important that set an accountant off during busy season. Whenever something like this gets you down, try to remember how it fits into the big picture.
Overall, busy season can go different ways for people – for some it is horrendous an for others it can be a really great learning experience for them. After all, this is the only way you will ever develop the skills necessary to get that promotion you want, so make the most of it!
